seamless on-street and digital wayfinding

Cork is medieval city centre is located on an island between two channels of the River Lee. A key tourist destination on the Irish South Coast with a rich history, numerous attractions and amenities. Commissioned as part of a design and implementation team including The Paul Hogarth Company, Tandem Design and Ascot Signage, we undertook the challenges of created an on-brand, bespoke Master Mapping Engine. Our vision was to create a future proof information system structured to provide versatile placemaking and wayfinding services across website, mobile phone, signage and print applications.

To represent the huge reach of the proposed wayfinding system, we developed a detailed city centre master map for on-street and digital applications complemented with a smaller scale locator map to show a greater context in the relationship with the River Lee.

Our strategic approach recommended primary decision-making points located throughout the city with ‘heads-up’ orientated map monoliths providing intuitive ‘You are here’ user positioning. Engaging map detailing highlights key attractions, promotes ‘hidden gems’ and encourages user onward journeys.

Dual language, Gaelic and English is applied consistently to all map content, location and destination names. A palette of carefully selected colours ensures good contrast, legibility and accessibility across all graphic elements. Map design utilises 2D iconic buildings to help aid user navigation.

The on-street maps are complemented with a suite of optional on-line digital mapping applications.

The latest digital developments now support live streaming of map data direct to mobile phone and when combined with the phones built in GPS functionality provides a powerful personal navigation device.
