london borough of greenwich.
from military past to Olympic future
The Royal Borough of Woolwich is one of five Olympic boroughs, and is currently undergoing a major regeneration programme. With the existing pedestrian signage now over a decade old, there were concerns that it would not meet future requirements. fwdesign was appointed to conduct an audit and develop a pedestrian wayfinding strategy that could evolve alongside future developments.
Our initial report highlighted various issues: a disconnect between the main part of the town and the Royal Arsenal development, an absence of heritage information to make people aware of Woolwich’s rich past and a missed opportunity to promote Woolwich within the surrounding area.
The subsequent strategy adopted the core principals of Legible London – heads-up mapping and a cohesive wayfinding system that effectively advertises everything Woolwich has to offer and communicates a tangible Woolwich ‘brand’ across the town. A complimentary interpretation strategy includes Vista Points, Heritage Trail Markers, a Heritage map and a smart phone application.
To deliver against tight timing and budget constraints, Woolwich has chosen our frank product range – with solar illuminated mapping – to carry the information system.
