london borough of havering.
Following the success of our Romford town centre wayfinding scheme, we extended its scope to include an integrated interpretation system. There was a need to enhance Romford as a visitor destination by developing the heritage and culture offer, with the aim to promote the town and foster a community that is proud of its surroundings.
We created an engaging strategy that focused on both visitor and resident. Our core idea centred on the development of an interpretive ribbon; an information source that engaged users at all stages of their journey. Our aim was 'to bring the museum to the street' and to instil a sense of intrigue through surprising and accessible methods.
The ribbon was literally transformed into a physical product, at key points users would be engaged by intriguing interventions such as 'Jewel Boxes', integrated into the ribbon. These contain small artefacts encased within a secure viewing box in the ground. The incidental nature of the products and the system engages users while they go about there everyday business and create a desire to learn more without forcing people to read lengthy amounts of text.
